ASU Law School Finds New Home in Downtown Phoenix

New Home for ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law

Phoenix, Arizona – The ASU Law School, formally known as the “Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law”, has found a new home in the Beus Center for Law and Society (BCLS) in downtown Phoenix. The beautiful new building space uses form and function to connect students, visitors, and the general public to the role of justice in society.

“It is a privilege—and a great responsibility—to be entrusted with the name and legacy of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (ret.). We strive to honor her by committing ourselves, as she has, to public service.”
-Dean Douglas Sylvester

Grand Opening of the Beus Center for Law and Society

It was truly an honor to photograph the grand opening of the Beus Center for Law and Society’s (BCLS). The venue was packed with ASU Law School alum, local and state politicians, students and faculty and many high-profile VIPs, including the college’s name-sake – Sandra Day O’Connor. The list of speakers addressing the full-house included Arizona Republican Senator, John McCain; ASU President, Michael Crow; Dean of the College of Law, Douglas Sylvester; Phoenix Mayor, Greg Stanton; Leo Beus (for whom the building was named); Arizona Board of Regents Chairman, Greg Patterson; and U.S. District Judge Diane Humetewa, the first Native American woman and enrolled tribal member to serve as a federal judge.

The grand opening highlighted how the building that Crow called a “world-class facility in a world-class location” would serve as more than home to ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. This $130 million state-of-the-art building symbolizes a new model for legal education – one that fosters openness, collaboration, and innovation for students who walk through its doors, and serves as a resource to the community. The BCLS was designed to be inviting, engaging, and accessible to everyone who is interested in learning about the law, its effect on our daily lives, and the many services and resources available through ASU and other BCLS partners.

“I am proud that this college bears my name. It is dedicated to providing students with opportunities and experience that advance justice and the rule of law.”
-Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (ret.)
